Potluck with Gordon Haller, the first ever Ironman Champion!
February 18 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm UTC-7Free
Gordon Haller was driving a taxi in Honolulu, Hawaii when he heard about the first ever Ironman Triathlon that would be held on Sans Souci Beach on Saturday February 18, 1978. Since he didn’t own a car, he commuted on a road bike and, since he had been both a high school and collegiate runner as well as a 2:27 marathoner, he would always try to squeeze in a few two mile runs each day around his job driving a taxi. There were some days where he was able to squeeze in five or six two-mile runs besides a few swims and bike rides.
He signed up for that first ever Ironman along with 14 other crazies and the one thing they all had in common was that no one had any idea if anyone could actually swim, bike and run 140.6 miles in one day, become an Ironman and get one of the coveted hold-in-the-head trophies that John and Judy Collins created to honor the achievement.
During that first ever Ironman, Navy SEAL John Dunbar had a big lead after the swim, but eventually Haller passed Dunbar about 21 miles into the marathon to win the first ever Ironman and to become one of twelve finishers to complete what is now considered the toughest one-day endurance event in sport.
Join us on Sunday February 18th-the actual 40th anniversary of Gordon Haller’s historic Ironman win- as we celebrate Gordon’s amazing achievement with a Babbittville Q&A at Function Smart.
And yes, Gordon Haller will be racing the 40th Anniversary edition of the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii on Saturday October 13th and that will be his 17th time racing the event. This is going to be an EPIC club meeting. Don’t miss it!
