Tri Club of San Diego Kids' Program

Parents are welcome to have your child age 5-14 to join our Youth Program - TCSD Kids! Membership is available for $45 for the year by selecting 'Junior' for Membership Type on the Join/Renew Membership page. Prior to signing your child up for TCSD Kids, it’s important that you review the program’s Standards so you can be sure that it is a good fit for your child.

The objective of TCSD Kids is to offer a developmental youth program that supports the Mission Statement of TCSD:

“To serve triathletes of all abilities by providing support, education and events to encourage and promote triathlon as a sport and a healthy lifestyle, and to encourage contact with other athletes and the triathlon community as a whole.”

Monthly swims, bike rides and track workouts will focus on learning proper technique and skills in each of the three disciplines of triathlon, developing healthy exercise habits and having fun in a safe and supportive environment.  TCSD Kids will also offer special events to compliment these disciplines, reinforce skills or just have fun!

Benefits of Participation:

  • Build confidence and self-esteem in a fun and safe multisport environment
  • Fun, safe and positive early experience in multisport
  • Help prepare kids for future multisport participation
  • Instill a lifelong passion for the multisport life and healthy living
  • Quality time together for parent and child
  • Help parents learn how to support their child in multisport

Please check the TCSD calendar for exact dates and times of workouts. Starting in April 2014, TCSD Kids is hosting a Thursday evening swim workout at De Anza Cove, around the first week of the month.  A bike workout will be offered around the second week of the month.  TCSD Kids will join the Wednesday night UCSD track workout around the third week of the month.  Special events will be scheduled monthly and announced as far in advance as possible.

TCSD Kids is organized and lead by a Committee of volunteers that currently include the following individuals:

Matty Reed (Strategic Advisor) is a professional triathlete, USA National Champion, 2008 Olympian, husband, father of three kiddos and is excited to help grow the TCSD Kids Youth Program.  He brings a wealth of knowedge pertaining to the sport of triathlon.

Carol Gasaway
(Committee Chair) is a USAT Level 1 Certified Coach and mother of two TCSD Kids. She is also a Certified Personal Trainer and has an extensive background in swimming as a collegiate athlete, prior youth team coach and prior certified Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI). Carol is an active volunteer in the triathlon community having served in too many capacities to name.  She is a member of this year's TCSD Ambassador Team.

Linda Rich has been working with the TCSD Youth Program since its inception in 2009. She is an active member of the TCSD community having served as the Wednesday Fiesta Island bike coach leading drills and time trials, volunteer coach at beginner swims, organizing duathlons and previews of the Spring Sprint, SDIT and the Mission Bay triathlons and instructing bike safety.  She gives back to the general triathlon community having been an organizer for Wildflower for 4 years and a swim buddy at various races.  She is passionate about helping kids experience triathlon and fitness in a fun and safe environment.  Linda is a member of this year's TCSD Ambassador Team.

Liz Olsen has extensive experience in swimming having started at 7 years old in the pool and in the ocean. She served as an aid at the Marshall Street Pool in South Oceanside at an early age in their Learn to Swim Program.  She previously taught swimming as a certified Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI). She is an active member of TCSD and has led the Tamarack Ocean swim workouts and volunteers as a swim buddy at various races.

Melissa Merklinger is a mother of three TCSD Kids.  She is an active triathlete and volunteer. Melissa serves as an inspiration to her kids through her participation and passion for multisport and the healthy lifestyle it promotes. Her commitment to this Youth Program stems from the importance of providing all kids the opportunity to be around like-minded, fun, positive, healthy friends and adults in a non-competitive and safe atmosphere.  In the non-triathlon world, she works as a finance/tax professional.

Alexis Barnes has been an active member of the triathlon community since moving back to San Diego in 2011. A longtime competitive swimmer, she has volunteered as a swim buddy at numerous area races and has volunteered in other capacities at the San Diego Half Marathon and TCSD events. She was recently elected to serve on the USAT Southwest Region Council, where she chairs the communications committee. She is also a member of the inaugural TCSD Ambassador Team. When not training or volunteering, Alexis spends time with her husband and 5-year-old son and working on her career as a speechwriter.

2013 SoCal Youth Triathlon Series -A Super TCSD Investment in Our Youth!

Written by 108380 on . Posted in Articles

Why do we do triathlon training? Well yes, for our health, feeling good, friends, sharing the healthy lifestyle with others, oh yeah, and to train for races!

Well our youth athletes also love a goal for their training, to compete in youth triathlons for fun, meeting new friends, and to have a chance to try out their progressing skills swimming, biking, running, and transitioning.  So we are fortunate that the Tri Club of San Diego was willing to sponsor, for the second year, our SoCal Youth Triathlon Series, organized by Youth Tri Coach Judi Carbary, to offer fun, safe, high quality youth age specific distanced triathlons for our youth athletes.

This year our focus was on promoting participation in our youth Tri series and prerace and open water swim clinics to safely prepare youth ages 7 to 15 for their youth events.  Over 400 youth participated in the youth triathlon series this year.  Awards were given if kids participated in 3 out of 5 youth races and 3 out of 5 prerace and open water swim clinics.  Our youth Tri series began in April at Bonelli Park and ended in September at our championship race at the Pacific Coast Kids Tri.

We look forward to 2014 when we will begin our third year of our youth triathlon series and sharing our Multisport lifestyle with our next generation of triathletes!
