Athlete Background:

Paula Newby-Frazer: At the age of 23-year-old Paula moved from Durban, South Africa to San Diego to pursue a dream of doing triathlon. In just her second Ironman at age 24 she was the first woman to go under 10 hours with her 9:49:14 winning time at Kona in 1986. She shocked the world of endurance sport when she took 11th overall including the men and smashed the course record by 34 minutes when she won with an amazing 9:01:01 time in 1988.

In 1992, she won her 5th Ironman Hawaii with a course record time of 8:55:28 -- a record which stood for 17 years until Chrissie Wellington broke it in 2009. After a spectacular collapse in the final mile at Kona in 1995, Newby-Fraser came back in 1996 with her smartest race ever to win an unmatched 8th Kona title - two more than Dave Scott, Mark Allen and Natascha Badmann. Her grand total of 24 Ironman victories is nearly twice as many as the 15 wins earned by her closest challenger and good friend Heather Fuhr.

Heather Fuhr: Heather has won 25 Ironman titles around the world and the 1997 Ironman World Championship. So what does she do for fun nowadays? She ‘dabbles’ in trail running… and she’s a helluva dabbler. She won the Catalina Marathon back in March and broke the women’s course record, in December she  finished second overall at the Ridgecrest 50K and broke the course record that was set by the legendary Ann Trason. On January 15th 2011 she stepped up to the Catalina 50 Miler and once again finished second overall and shattered the course record.

Paul Huddle: has been coaching triathletes since 1994. He competed as a top level pro for 11 years, from 1983 to 1994, and combines that comprehensive experience with an umatched combination of technical knowledge and intuition to successfully guide both professionals and age groupers of all levels toward their goals.

Paul holds a BS in food science from the University of Arizona (Go Cats!). He was closely involved in the early development of the USAT triathlon coaching certification program and is also a USA Cycling Elite Coach. His longtime partner Paula Newby-Fraser is a 24 time Ironman winner, and although Paul is rather modest about his influence over that success ("Paula listen to me? Are you kidding?"), he can't help but have learned a little something along the way.

Roch Frey:  has been involved with the sport of triathlon for the past twenty years and has been bringing this valuable experience for the past ten years into his personal coaching. With a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education, majoring in Coaching, Roch has a wealth of information to share with his personal clients.

A former professional triathlete from Canada who's coaching expertise has becoming world renown among the very best in the sport. Having won the Canadian Long Course National Championships in 1993, Roch turned to full-time coaching the following year. The founder of the UCSD Master's Triathlon Training Club in 1996, and past head coach, Roch is now building a triathlon training program in San Diego's north county and works with 15-20 triathletes each year on a one-to-one basis.

Nov. Club Meeting: Julie Moss & Kathleen McCartney Thursday 17th 5p-8p

on . Posted in Club Meetings

It is considered the most important moment in Triathlon and Ironman history. In the winter of 1982 the battle between Kathleen McCartney (left) and Julie Moss (right) became must see TV as Moss’s huge lead disappeared in a matter of minutes. The finish that evening became one of the signature moments of ABC’s Wide World of Sports when, after being passed within yards of the finish, Moss crawled towards the finish and collapsed on the line. That epic Agony of Defeat/Thrill of Victory moment touched people watching at home who decided they needed to find out for themselves why crossing that Ironman finish line was so damn important.

On November 17th Bob Babbitt from Competitor Magazine will interview  about the race, the finish that linked them forever and their lives since that classic moment nearly 30 years ago.
