The Triathlon Club of San Diego offers an extensive swim program to help everyone from beginners to seasoned athletes. The core of our program are weekly coached workouts in the pool. These workouts are split into two groups. The first group concentrates on stroke technique and mechanics. This is the best place to start if you are new to swimming or don't feel very comfortable in the water. This group uses drills and individual instruction to help you learn the basic mechanics of swimming. It's also a good place to go to brush up on your stroke. Everyone can benefit from a second set of eyes evaluating their stroke. The second pool group swims a traditional drill set workout. Speed and distance vary, but the usual workout is 2000-2500 meters.

The pool workouts take place at the Jewish Community Center (JCC) in University City. The pool is an olympic size pool that set up as yard or meters (25 yard lengths vs. 50 meter lengths) depending on the day. It's an outdoor pool with a bathroom that can be used for changing. This is a top notch facility. The cost is $5 per swim session, however, a multiple swim card can be purchased at a discount. We do not have access to the JCC locker rooms and pool entrance is at the back gate to the pool (not through the front of the JCC). Swims are Monday and Wednesday at 7:30pm.


After becoming comfortable in the pool you can work your way into open water. Mission Bay offers a great way to get used to open water swimming without having to deal with heavy waves or deep swells. Mission Bay, and at times Glorietta Bay on Coronado, are where we offer our beginning open water swim programs. The distances vary, but are usually 1000 meters - enough to get used to swimming without lane lines and sighting buoys. Wetsuits are recommended so you can simulate a real race swim. This is a great way to get over your fear of open water. Don't worry, you're never far from shore and our coaches are always nearby to offer words of encouragement. This is not the place to learn how to swim, however, it's a great place to work on your swimming if you don't like pools. Open water swimming can be a lot of fun. Especially here in San Diego. We are fortunate to have many opportunities to swim in the ocean. Depending on the day of the week, we have organized swims at La Jolla Shores, La Jolla Cover, and Fletcher Cover in Solana Beach. There are often other swims at Tamarack beach in Carlsbad as well. The Cove swims happen Friday night at 6:00pm and Sunday morning. Once a month we have a Pot Luck on the grass above The Cove. Monday night at 6:00pm we meet at La Jolla Shores. The distances in these swims varies from 1/2 mile to 2 miles depending on your strength. This is a great place to get used to the ocean while still feeling like you're in a protected bay. Since the Cove is a protected ecological park you'll also likely see a lot of marine life on your swim as well. The ocean swims are held in Spring, Summer, and Fall. During the winter many people continue to get together and swim, although not quite as frequently.

Mission Statement

To serve triathletes of all abilities by providing support, education and events to encourage and promote triathlon as a sport and a healthy lifestyle, and to encourage contact with other athletes and the triathlon community as a whole.

Who We Are

The Triathlon Club of San Diego is one of the oldest and largest triathlon clubs in the country. Our club members reside primarily in San Diego and Southern Orange County but we also have many international members from Canada, Japan, and Australia. Our members’ experience level ranges from first timer to professional. The Club is here to support all levels of triathletes by offering training sessions, organized races, coached clinics, monthly meetings, social activities and more.

Monthly Meetings

The Triathlon Club of San Diego holds monthly meetings at Road Runner Sports in San Diego. All are welcome to attend. Previous speakers have included Ryan Hall, Chrissie Wellington, Jordan Rapp, Dave Scott, Mark Allen, Scott Tinley, Michellie Jones, Paula Newby-Fraser, Greg Welch, Heather Fuhr, Joanna Zeiger, Dan Empfield, Rock Frey, Bob Babbitt, Paul Huddle, and Chris McCormack - just to name a few.

Weekly Workouts

The Club typically holds workouts every day of the week including, Monday: Ocean Swim at La Jolla Shores, Tuesday: Morning Coast Bike Ride, Wednesday: Coached Track Workouts, Thursday: Morning Coast Bike Ride, Friday: Morning Ocean Swim , Afternoon Swim at La Jolla Cove, Saturday: Multiple Bike Rides, and Sunday: Pennasquitos Canyon Run. The workouts are open to all members and all levels in North County, South County and in-between.


The Triathlon Club of San Diego organizes monthly club races including the Coronado Triathlon, Fiesta Island Duathlon, and the Pine Valley Duathlon. These races are part of our year long Grand Prix Race Series. In the Summer months we present the Aquathlon race series consisting of six ocean swim/beach run races. Other club race events include the Pennasquitos Ride & Tie, the Polar Bear Triathlon, the Otay Lakes Duathlon and multiple short distance beginner friendly races. The club provides on-line race results for all club races.


The club offers Ironman training & coaching programs, beginner training & coaching programs, bike maintenance courses, swim programs, bike coaching, run coaching, surf entry clinics and more. The club also offers access to professional trainers and multi-sport clinics for athletes of all levels.

Social Events

Club social activities include the La Jolla Shores aquathlon beach parties, year-end awards presentation, Ironman viewing party, La Jolla Cove swim potlucks, Tour de France viewing party, moonlight hikes, moonlight ocean swims, movies, dinner and dancing, annual pool party & bbq, volunteer and community efforts, and more.


The Triathlon Club of San Diego has negotiated discounts from a growing list of sponsors. Discounts are available on race entry fees and at local suppliers of bikes and accessories, nutrition, apparel, running shoes, swim gear, sports rentals, restaurants, car Services and more.
