If you're gonna play, you better know the rules!

The rules of triathlon aren't terribly complicated, but if you don't know them, you can lose precious minutes from your overall time if a race marshall catches you. Rule violations may go unnoticed by the race marshalls, but they will likely be noticed by your competitors.

Be fair to your competitors, and yourself - race with honor. If breaking the rules is a regular part of your race routine, we ask that you not race in TCSD gear.

Ignorance is no excuse...learn the rules!  Most races publish rules on their websites.

USA Triathlon is the governing body of our sport and they establish the rules for all USAT sanctioned events, which most likely is a majority of the triathlons that you will participate in. The USAT Rule Book can be found on the USAT website.

The Race Rewards derby is open to all members!

And you DO NOT HAVE TO PODIUM TO WIN. To participate in the Race Rewards, complete the qualifying races (below) in the LA Tri Club kit/uniform, and your name will be entered in the random drawing for great sponsor products to be awarded at the YEP (Year End Party).

The Kit (top & bottoms) must be worn for both the bike and run.  You must submit a completed Podium Program Claim Form no later than 30 days from the date of the race.

RULES

You must be a registered, paid up, bonafide member of the LA Tri
Club WHEN YOU DO THE RACE! Races run before your membership
are not eligible retroactively.

All races must be run in LA Tri Club gear. You don’t have to be head-to-toe but you must have a jersey/jacket/singlet or shorts -- something
to let the world know you are down with the red, white and blue. A
hat is not enough.

HOW TO CLAIM A RACE

If a claim is found to be false, membership will be revoked.

You must race IN YOUR OWN NAME. Relays do not count.

You must enter as a member of LA Tri Club when the race allows you
to do so. Some races don’t have a club selection or a club championship,
but if they do, you must enter as an LATC member.

You are responsible for entering completed races into the derby page
on our website. We’ll verify at the end of the season, but it’s up
to you to track your progress.

5 completed races gets you entered once into the drawing, 7 completed
races gets you in twice, and 9 or more gets you in three times.

All races count as *one* except M-Dot Ironman races that count as
*two*.

You have to complete the race. Just entering isn’t enough!

If you don’t like the list of races or these rules, you are encouraged to
take up lawn bowling.

How did we select the races? The major criteria are:

  • Timing -- races spread out from March through October.
  • LATC Club-Select Races are included in this list.
  • Ability -- Anyone from newbies to pros can all have an opportunity to qualify.
  • Discounts -- many of the races give entry-discounts to LA Tri Club members.
  • USAT -- Most of the races are USAT certified. Those that aren’t usually hold themselves to high standards of quality and safety.
  • National/international prominence -- races that aren’t local are high caliber USAT/ITU championship events or M-Dot Ironman races

The Podium Program rewards LATC members

PAYOUTS (AKA “THE MATH, FOR THE CASH”)

Payouts will be based on placing and the distance of the race.

  1. How did you do? Select your base payout:
    • 1st in division - $50
    • 2nd in division - $35
    • 3rd in division - $25
  2. Use the chart below to select the race distance.
  3. Determine your multiplier based on the type of race. Division winners use the standard multiplier.
Top 3 overall? Your payout just increased! Use the appropriate multiplier.
  4. Multiply the base payout by the multiplier… and collect your CASH!

Example:
An LATC member who earns 1st at a 70.3 (but doesn't place overall) would earn $50 x 1.5 for a total of $75. A member placing 1st in division and 1st age grouper overall at a 70.3 would earn $50 x 4.5 = $225 total payout.
